Hi, this isn’t a post about video games “getting worse.” I genuinely don’t think that’s true, I actually think games today are really good. That’s kind of the core of the problem: a lot of new games look amazing and are closer to what I like, yet I still can’t really have fun or spend hours playing like I used to. I’ll explain more.
I’ve been a gamer since I was a kid. I’ve always been mostly into Nintendo and PC, and I grew up playing games like Super Smash Bros, Minecraft, Pokémon, Spore, Bloons Tower Defense, Fire Emblem, etc. I have hundreds (sometimes thousands) of hours in those series, and I’ve played a lot of different stuff over the years.
Now I’m 23, and I actually have *more* free time than before because I don’t have exams to revise for or projects to prepare all the time. And yet... I can’t spend hours on video games anymore. It genuinely makes me sad because so many games that come out today seem incredible. When I play, I feel like I’m having fun, but as soon as I stop... I don’t want to go back. It feels like I’m forcing myself, like it’s a chore.
At first I thought it was the PC form factor (sitting at a desk) that was killing my motivation, so I bought a Steam Deck, and it helped a bit. But thinking about it more, I don’t really *want to play games,* I just want to *use my Steam Deck*. So I end up playing a game for 2 hours, then switching to another, and doing that forever. I’m having fun... but that’s going to get expensive eventually.
Then I tried to think about which games actually made me play a lot in the last 3 years, and honestly I can only name 3:
* Bloons Tower Defense 6 - I’ve played Bloons since the Flash days. I bought BTD6 pretty late because I stayed on BTD5, and I ended up putting 200+ hours into it on Steam (and I also own it on phone). * Pokémon Legends Z-A -I know it’s controversial, which is why I don’t understand the hate. It’s one of the only games in recent years that truly made me want to play and finish it. * Balatro - having it on my phone helped, but I absolutely no-lifed this game.
I’ve played many other games in the last 3 years, but very few went beyond 20 hours.
Looking at these three, I feel like for the first two, familiarity helped a lot, and for the third, it’s portability and being able to play anytime. But even retro games I loved as a kid are hard for me to replay and finish now.
I’m at a point where all retro games feel “bad” because they aged poorly, and all modern games have this *something* that makes me not want to return after a session.
Do other people feel this way? I honestly want to “fix” this because it really bothers me that I don’t have the motivation to play games I actually like. #games source
