Playing by ear is so freeing compared to learning with sheet music

I've always played piano using sheet music and occasionally with Synthesia videos. Over the years I made some attempts at developing my ear with both singing and piano, but I didn't take it seriously enough to be able to play a song quickly.

Two months ago I got a new piano, and I decided that I would try again at this playing by ear thing. I started with using the chords as a guide then eventually moving to just using my ears. To my surprise I was able to catch on quickly, I suppose finally all the music theory and previous attempts just finally clicked together in my head.

Now I can sit down and play whatever song I like. I still take some time to figure it out but much less than before. Maybe after around 1 to 2 minutes I can play the chorus of whatever song I like! Compared to before when I would spend at least 5 min looking for the sheets, sometimes even 30 or more for really niche songs, then spend even more time studying the notes.

The commitment to each piece was restricting me more than I thought and now it feels like I'm so free and that the music is just flowing from my fingertips. 💓💞❤️

That's a cool shift! What song did you tackle first by ear, and how's the progress feeling after two months?
