my friend embarrassed me and an innocent man the other day. what should i do next time?
i am an introvert with severe social anxiety and i get secondhand embarrassment extremely fast, especially when i’m placed in the middle of the situation.
the other day i accompanied my friend while she went grocery shopping. she didn’t have her card so she asked the female cashier if they took virtual pay. the female associate says yes and we proceed to shop.
we get to the line and a really nice male cashier rung up her stuff while i stood to the side leaning on the basket. he finishes ringing her up and tells her the total and ask which payment method was she using. she says apple pay. so he nods and turns the card machine for her to tap her phone to pay.
the card declined. he tries to save her from embarrassment so he jokingly blames it on the machine saying “these things are junk, am i right?” (this was really considerate because he could’ve just said “YOUR CARD DECLINED! and embarrassed her in front of all the other customers in line). my friend stale faced him and tried to tap it again. declined. then the guy asked what kind of card she was using and it turned out the card she was trying to use wasn’t accepted for virtual pay. he said she needed the physical card.
she started acting so ugly and hostile to him. eye rolling. snarky tone. an overall really bad attitude. i was so embarrassed and ready to go. this guy was nothing but kind. if anything, she should’ve been upset with the female cashier that originally told her that the card was accepted. but honestly she should’ve been mad at herself for loosing her physical card in the first place!
so then she scratches the basket from the man and says: “then i guess WE will just put everything back!” (alluding that i would put the items back too). there was no way i was going to put back all 70+ items. she must’ve lost her mind! so i just stood there while she stormed off and i could see the irritation on the cashier’s face.
so while she’s frantically throwing things back on the shelves, i just quietly leave the store and wait by the car. my heart went out to that cashier because he was innocent and even tried to save her from embarrassment.
