Help! I have a college orientation in 4 hours and I’m socially awkward as hell!

I‘ve heard the advice “just make small talk” before. To me, small talk is impossible. Yes, I know common questions or statements. “How are you?“ ”What’s your name?” “What’s your major?””Are you from (state)?“

And when they answer…then what? I can either answer the same question for myself, or ask them another question. It’ll still be another dead end. There’s only so many questions I can ask before somebody thinks I’m too nosey. I am exclusively used to interacting with people who also have no people skills and don’t know how to hold a conversation. Quite frankly, I think everyone my age might be this way.

I need some examples of an expandable conversation topic that’ll actually turn into a conversation. I don’t want to ask anybody about their interests because that’s boring and I don’t actually care. I don’t like asking people questions I don’t actually want to know the answer to. It feels inauthentic and gross. Small talk is pretty much purely that. I hate it. Yet I can make friends so easily past that small talk stage.

If I was standing in front of a person I did not know, which I will be very soon, I would have literally nothing to say to them. I can’t think of a single thing I actually care about knowing genuinely. I also expect I will feel extremely nervous and have prickles all over my face trying to decide who to work up the courage to talk to when it’s really all a trap because again, I have nothing to say to anyone.

Maybe I‘ll just blabber incessantly about The Sims as I’ve historically done because at least it’ll get me talking.
