The Joker isn’t a relatively hard/impressive character to play
For some reason, The Joker has become an infamous archetype of a particularly difficult and complex character to portray on screen, and I just don’t believe that’s the case. Now I’m not saying just anyone can play the joker, but to the average professional actor, it shouldn’t be a hard role. There’s not as much to it as people make it out for there to be. It’s not really a challenge for an actor to do a maniacal laugh and act and talk like an unhinged, witty psycho. But people talk it up like there’s an exclusive club of a very select few actors who have/could actually pull it off. It is actually easier for actors to play characters like the Joker that are more exaggerated and expressive rather than a character like, for example, Snape that relies more on subtle expressions and vague motives.
I believe a lot of it has to do with Heath Ledgers death. It’s no secret we as a society tend to exaggerate the lives and accomplishments of celebrities who have passed away, and I think Heath Ledger as Joker is no different. Absolutely he gave an outstanding performance, but it wasn’t anything that deserves to be revered over a lot of other great villain performances like it is. It wasn’t noticeably better than, for example, Josh Brolin as Thanos. It was a great performance of a great character that shouldn’t have been as hard to portray as most people, including Heath Ledger himself, made it out to be.
