UK traveller No Cal Roadtrip - 18 years in the making
Hello all.
So I’m flying from the UK to San Francisco in May 2026 for a Northern California road trip that I have wanted to do for 18 years. I would love advice on, well, anything really.
These are the locations and activities I have booked so far:
May 14–16 (3 nights): San Francisco - Alcatraz Night Tour.
May 16–18 (2 nights): Monterey / Carmel-by-the-Sea - Whale Watching Tour. - Planning to drive part of Big Sur - Stop at National Steinbeck Centre on my drive to Yosemite
May 18–22 (4 nights): Yosemite National Park (Curry Village) - All the official park activities were fully booked when i checked... 6 months ago.
May 22–25 (3 nights): Markleeville Area - Grover Hot Springs State Park - Exploring the eastern Sierra
May 25–28 (3 nights): Stinson Beach - Slower beach time before flying home
About me: - Fit and up for proper hikes. The main point of this trip is Yosemite. I have wanted to see it since I was a whippersnapper. I worry about the amount of time I have booked there but I just snapped up some availability in Curry Village when I could. - I love water! I'm absolutely a water person. If there are any safe places to swim, jump off rocks, just generally be submerged in water with lovely stuff around me, I am interested in that. I swim in Welsh Reservoirs in December so I'm pretty robust. - I don’t mind detours if they’re worth it. Short Hikes, weird roadside things, incredible viewpoints, food spots, hidden gems. I want em! - I've tried not to over pack my itinerary but I also don't want to miss anything really special.
If this were your trip, what would you make sure I didn’t skip?
