Being forced to wear name tags at work should be abolished
I never understood why we need to have our names plastered on us every time we’re at work. Random people do not need to be knowing our names like that. It does nothing but put employees at risk for potential stalking and harassment. they abuse this information and dudes will be so annoying repeating your name every five seconds if they perceive you as a woman to either intimidate you or try to get to know more about you when you’d rather just keep it pushing.
service workers already have to deal with enough harassment at work we shouldn’t be giving random people more information to extend that boundary crossing behavior outside of work or looking us up with our personal information just because they want to order a cup of coffee. The anxiety of random people not only knowing your face and your schedule but your name is real. That and some customers are vindictive and have personal bias. them knowing your name makes it easy for them to know exactly who to complain about and get in trouble with our employers because the worker didn’t want to be their personal punching bag. i’ve literally had a customer be a complete ass to one of my coworkers and mentioned her name in a google review lying about what happened just to get her in trouble. it makes it so easy for customers, especially repeat problematic ones, to target employees. It just feels like you’re constantly being monitored and it makes your job more stressful overall.
And of course none of the head managers wear a name tag. apparently their privacy and safety is more important than ours. i’ve purposefully “lost” so many of my name tags and they somehow always have more to give me. the only good thing is ever since being promoted to assistant manager they somehow stopped caring about me wearing my name tag or not. as if it’s an unspoken special privilege given to those in higher positions and those below should be put on the front lines of the customer’s mercy (or lack of it).
customers do not need to know us like that and i can’t think of any actual tangible reason for them to know our names just to find what aisle the toothpaste is kept. forcing familiarity by putting us on first name basis always seemed like an unnecessary thing to me. #conversation source
