How do you stay dry with frequent water crossings up to…

How do you stay dry with frequent water crossings up to the knee or so?

I typically hike Adirondack lowlands on unmaintained trails with a lot of bog crossings. This can be slow because you have to poke the bog with a pole to see how far down it goes. What looks like a few inches of water can have a foot or two of mud underneath. This means with the occasional small error, I frequently sink down up to the knee or further.

It becomes more challenging in September-June as this is a cold climate where getting wet can become a life threatening situation. As a result, I don’t spend much time in my favorite forests most of the year.

Is there any gear that can help mitigate this risk in colder weather? I see a lot of fishing gear for it but nothing that one could wear on a lengthy hike. All my searches just turn up the same old gaiters that you use for snow but these don’t keep the water out when your leg is submerged past the top of the boot. I can’t possibly be the only person with this need. Thanks!
