Finally made some friends and how I did it

Right now I am in language school, so my semesters are not typical length. Last semester I felt sufficiently socialised since I had like 4 hours of class everyday. On the other hand, I did not have many real friends. Over the 2 weekend break I have between semesters, my dad visited where I am living and basically forced me to come and meet a ton of his friends. At first I thought my dad is too outgoing, especially for East Asian culture, but the truth is every culture has outgoing people.
I had no particular feelings about going to meet his friends, but tagging along with my dad to this sort of thing helped me learn a lot about socialising, which I got to apply today. It was opening day today for the new semester at language school and finally I got the courage to just ask people for their name and where they are from basically. It felt really awkward at first, I felt like I was intruding on people’s space, but after like 2 people or so it got much more natural. I feel like a lot of my trouble getting to know people was all in my head. After asking peoples name and where they are from, i found it was not that difficult to make conversation. Another really important thing i learned is getting socials as soon as possible. This has also helped me to communicate with people more. Last semester I kinda just hoped friends would come to me if I were there and maybe this sounds obvious but you have to put in efforts to get yourself out there so people actually know about you. Waiting too long to make conversation basically means the opportunity to make friends will slip away. Anyways, I am proud of some of the lessons I’ve learned and applied. It really is like people say, have to practice consistently. Thing is nobody can do it for you, you just kinda have to have a “f\*ck it” attitude and put yourself out there.
