The Battle of Sunda Strait
After the disastrous Battle of the Java Sea the survivors HMAS Perth and USS Houston attempted to withdraw to the south. By chance a Japanese invasion fleet consisting of one aircraft carrier, five cruisers, 12 destroyers, and 58 transports was also heading into the Sunda Strait at the same time. The Perth and the Houston found themselves surrounded with no hope of retreat and facing an overwhelming force had no choice but to go down fighting.
The Dutch destroyer HNLMS Eversten was also in the area at the time trying to catch up with the cruisers and was subsequently attacked and sunk.
