Can the outdoor part of mini-split go in my crawl space?
We just recently moved into our newly built house in upstate SC. We have decided that rather than using our garage for our vehicles we’re just going to make it a home gym and work shop for our various hobbies, and it’s also going to be where our dogs sleep. Our summers are typically well into the 90’s but with the humidity the heat index is well into the 100’s. Winters are relatively mild where the temps stay in the 20’s/30’s and 40’s and we’ll go through spurts of it getting down in the teens. We had our garage insulated when the house was built so that we could add a mini split later on.
We’re now to “later on” and I’m looking into DIY units on Amazon and various other places. The issue I’m running into is placement of the outdoor unit. Our garage is on the front left corner of the house, and all the units I’m seeing come with a 13ft “interconnecting hose”. In order to achieve that distance my 2 options are to mount the outdoor unit on the front of the house or in the crawl space. I say “options”, but I can tell you mounting it on the front of the house is most definitely not an option with the wife. Our master bath is between the garage and the back of the house. I looked up whether or not the outdoor unit could go in the crawl space and it wasn’t very clear…it said “yes, as long as it has sufficient ventilation”, but doesn’t really clarify what that is. Our crawl space is pretty huge compared to our last house. On the garage end of the house, it’s just low enough that it’s easier to crawl rather than to try and walk that hunched over (I’d estimate about 3ft tall). But the majority of the crawl space is high enough that I can walk around just slightly hunched over (I’d estimate around 5ft). There is nothing in the crawl space since all of our central hvac is run through the attic, so the crawl space is wide open other than footers.
So I guess I’m curious if this counts as “sufficient ventilation” or not. Also, our crawl space is vented rather than fully encapsulated if that matters. #home source
