How to be heard in a large group? Just started college…

How to be heard in a large group?

Just started college this week, and I have been trying to form good friendships ever since. My usual way to friendship is through 1-on-1 conversations or through mutual friends. But these don’t really work when you’re in college and everyone that you want to be friends with are hanging out in these large friend groups.
I have struggled a lot with social anxiety and I generally think a lot before I speak, so this further contributes to being bad in group conversations.
A major factor also contributing to this, is that a lot a of them are from big cities and use a lot of slangs which I’m not quite familiar to.
Everytime I hang out in these groups I get a sort of inferiority complex when I cant catch up to these convos. Eventhought most of them are all really nice people.
I can’t really go with generic advice like “just dont engage with large groups at once” because if I do that I’ll be left out of the friendmaking process that goes around during the first few weeks of college. Most people already have a coherent group that they hang out with and so if I delay this any further I’ll have trouble adjusting.
I’ll be happy with any tips on how to converse in group or how to make friends in general!
