Best way to cut rusted corrugated metal planter?

Not the best picture, but it's one of those basic corrugated metal planters. Super rusted, plus a tree coming out that the metal is cutting into the trunk. We just moved in, first spring here and I'm wondering how to deal with this. When I looked up about it it said things about metal saws or tin snips. I'm not imagining I'll have a lot to cut with a metal saw, but I could spring for the snips if they'll work. The only other option I can figure is to just remove the tree then get rid of the planter. Any tips? Will the snips work?

so the metal wont affect the tree! the tree will continue to grow around the metal!
