Overcame severe ocd and depression, a reminder that it is okay if your aduting path looks different
I was a very extroverted kid, but after constant parent fights and my best friend’s suicide when I was 12, I fell into severe depression and intrusive-thought OCD. I come from a society where mental health is a bit taboo, so I carried it alone for a long time.
In 2020, everything completely fell apart. I finally went to a psychiatrist for treatment, got better, and today I'm doing much better.
But during those years, I lost so much time. I never had a relationship. I was thriving academically and professionally, an ideal version of me that my OCD fed into but I completely neglected my health. I became overweight because of OCD medication and a stagnant lifestyle.
The turning point came in 2024 when I went to do my Master's at a premier institute in my country. Looking at the people around me, for the first time in my life, I wanted to be more than just someone who excels at academics and job.
I started working out and lost 20 kg. I joined extracurriculars, danced to Britney Spears' Toxic in front of my entire cohort, and won first place. I tried my best to break out of the personality built by years of trauma, and I fell for someone. I showed him how much I liked him, and even though he ended up rejecting me, I accepted it right away, wished him well, and walked away. I still put myself out there even with zero prior experience.
His rejection sucks , but at the end of the day, I am proud of myself for overcoming this and being brave. I never succumbed to destructive behavior or addictions. I’m still working on myself, and I hope one day I’ll meet someone I can love freely. And I am 26 by the way.
And I hope to all the people struggling out there , I hope you can make it through whatever you are struggling with. As Dumbledore said , Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the lights. #inspiration source
