ESPN covers professional wrestling, which is of course not a sport, as it lacks a competitive element; it’s a performance art with an athletic aspect. That also describes ballet. Ballet is one of the most intensive athletic activities a human can take part in. Unlike most other super-intensive athletic activities, almost all people in the developed world are at least passingly familiar with ballet (via the Nutcracker, if nothing else). It does have an internal competition in a way, as dancers compete for parts, etc., which naturally creates the kind of drama media companies love. Really, there’s no reason ESPN shouldn’t cover ballet, as long as it’s covering professional wrestling. #conversation
