Getting the bad news out of the way, you might not ever truly "own" your stuff but that's okay.
I remember pre-2010 when all I could do was go to shops and hope that they have the thing I was looking for. Most times, I'd come away empty handed or with something that wasn't even on my radar but I HAD to have it because it was too good of a deal to pass up or whatever.
Also remember feeling very passionately about a show, book, game, etc., loaning it to a friend, and they either never enjoy it or they give it to me in worse shape than I left it.
I've been like most people for probably 15 years now. I stream or buy everything digitally. I've never lost a license to anything. My house is nice and tidy. Stopped feeling like my walls were caving in on me a long time ago. I've had easier access to just about anything I'd ever want than at any point in my life. My digital library treats me well.
I could get rid of my PC, my Kobo, or any other connected device today, buy another a year later, and odds are it'd be like picking up where I left off. Maybe I don't "own" anything, but what I do have is more control over my environment and my money. And in the off chance I buy something on a whim and not like it, it's whatever. No need to stare at it all of the time. No need to try and sell it (I hate the second hand market. Way too many shady people.) Idk, it's all about pros and cons. Maybe I'll own nothing but I think I'm happier than I was during the good ol days. #conversation source
