Are there places that were tourist hotspots that fell out of popularity and went back to being local spots?
I am planning a trip to Japan in the spring, and I hear a lot about places that have become so overrun with tourists they have lost their original appeal (like Harajuku and the Tsukiji Outer Market). It got me thinking about how long a place stays a tourist hotspot once it becomes one. Are there places where, after a decade or so of being labeled a tourist trap, tourists gradually ventured elsewhere, and it was reclaimed by locals? Can anyone think of places around the world that were once tourist hotspots but are now relatively calm? I think one example could be the Poconos (though Jim Thorpe specifically has become a bit overrun from social media), but I don't know about internationally. #travel
