Around April 2025 I booked a hotel in Quebec City for a stay in February 2026. In August 2025, I received a notification that the property had cancelled my booking; I was pissed because their prices had doubled at that point so I booked a different hotel for my stay.
Fast forward to yesterday, my card gets charged for the cancelled booking. Hotels.com support has been useless because the charge was initiated directly by the property, and they are not able to get in touch with the property. I tried calling the property directly yesterday, and I’m also unable to get through myself.
I expect a chargeback would resolve in my favor, but I’m honestly baffled by the whole situation. Why would the property be allowed to retain my payment information on a cancelled booking? I feel like this would justify a consumer protections complaint but apparently I can only do that if I don’t get my money back.
