Trekking poles in carry on bag?

I saw a couple of old posts from 3-5 years ago where most people said TSA does not allow trekking poles. However, I see on the TSA What Can I Bring List https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/sporting-and-camping?viewsreference%5Bcompressed%5D=eJxlkE0OwiAQha9iZt2FVhNNtx7BA5BRpjgJTAmdaozp3QWJP9EF4T3eNw_CHSwqQncHTG4KJAodHOKQlMUtUOxijyFmDQ2cCS0l6GTyvgHPgfVlhr4f6e0iusJBnlFWT_V8boAEj56syWzpH8u9L7juzfc73nIunSkrkxfrzegt0nMmoUsYz_ALsM1xu9r-BR7FnQZbpkk-ac_krREMJajmwnT9AIkuPPIgtXm9adtdDivJSsFY8uUjl_MDjCF2dA&page=3 that blunt-tipped hiking poles are allowed as carry on. Does this mean we can remove the tip and carry it on? What is most people's experience in practice? I'm thinking about buying a pair but wouldn't do so if I can't carry them with me on most trips.
