South Korea’s Dirty Dozen didn’t go so well…

In 1968, North Korea attempted to assassinate South Korean President Park Chung Hee at his residence in Seoul. In response, Park approved a plan that would take 31 convicted criminals to a small, uninhabited island, and train them to kill North Korean leader Kim Il Sung. The group, nicknamed Unit 684, were promised jobs and money if they followed the training and successfully killed Kim.

The next three years for the members of Unit 684 were brutal. 7 members would die due to the conditions on the island, though the surviving members became adept at combat and were solely focused on killing Kim. Unfortunately for the group, relations between the two countries warmed in the Summer of 1971, and Park called off the mission, along with the promises to the members.

This news was not taken well by the members of Unit 684. Enraged, the 24 men killed most of the guards on the island, made their way to mainland South Korea, and hijacked a bus. Hundreds of soldiers were mobilized to track down and stop the bus, eventually stopping them in Seoul. A small battle ensued, with South Korean soldiers shooting into the bus, and many members of Unit 684 committing suicide as the soldiers gained control. Only four members of Unit 684 survived the mutiny and conflict, though they were later tried and executed in 1972.
