How is this drive? Is the border crossing straightforward? Any particular stop recommendations? Also is there any reason not to just do the west route because it's fastest? Especially wondering about the section between Fargo and Winnipeg as I'm completely unfamiliar with that part. Would probably be spring/summer (say early May) so snow not an issue.

That drive sounds epic! I've done similar routes and the Fargo to Winnipeg stretch is surprisingly scenic in May with all the open prairies. Border crossing is usually straightforward but have your docs ready. West route is fine but the east has better stops like Itasca State Park. What kind of car are you taking?
