Fitting a logs when building a traditional Finnish log…

Fitting a logs when building a traditional Finnish log cabin.

Video is 1h45 minutes in bit over a minute. First we put logs in place and scribe the corner notches. Saw them and fit the logs on top of each other. Scribe the bottom log shape to top one and then with chainsaw shape the bottom of top logs to fit perfectly on log below. After first shaping we cut the corner notches deeper so that there is small air gap in the corners so the log only rests on top of each other. Then couple of fittings and figuring out high spots and evening it out that in the edges of the cut there is 1mm or less of a gap. After building is done first winter will settle the logs so that it is basically airtight between the logs.

Repeat many weekends and you will have a log cabin. With all the other tasks there is we manage on average 4 logs in a day on top of the foundation.

When logs get too high we disassemble everything and leave only top logs on foundation during the carving phase so we don't have to climb or build scaffolding. We just measure the new first layer to be level the same way it was higher up.

This is my absolute favourite past time atm. Sadly it is 2h drive away so it is not every evening work but me and my family try to arrange time once per month to continue the build.
