I travel to Japan extremely often. I’ve been going back multiple times a year since 2023 and usually stay 1-3 months at a time and enter usually twice a year.
So far in 2026, I was just there from April 22nd until July 15th.
I have flight booked for 3 days from now on September 8th. I would like to be there to spend Christmas with my girlfriend of 3 years.
The problem is, my visa when taking into account the 180 day rule doesn’t seem to stretch further than December 7th.
So I was thinking maybe to go to Korea for October for a few weeks and then return to Japan mid November which will stretch it nicely.
Is this required?
I do not work in Japan. I have funds so it’s not a worry. Also, my girlfriend’s family lets me sleep over there for a few days every week. So I always have a place to stay.
Does anyone have any advice. I wanted to do working holiday but I decided to wait until February when I return to Canada to apply for that visa.

I’ve done a visa run to Korea before back in 2024 since I stayed 87 days in Japan and went to Korea for 3 days and returned to Japan.
The officer lady basically asked me questions about why I was coming to Japan again. I simply told her that my girlfriend lives there and we have lots of plans we want to do together. She looked at them and then accepted after some questioning and approved my stamp.
Then the next lady she spoke to was so friendly and found it so sweet that my gf mother accepts me so much.
Just adding that so you know, I’ve done the run before. This time, I wouldn’t wait till 90 days but instead leave after first 30 days and then stay for a few weeks in Korea then return.
One thing that also helped was show a pre-planned itinerary once officer who was questioning me. I had exact dates all planned out with Korea run already planned written down which didn’t seem to be a problem 😂 #travel source
