How to decide on a major to set myself up well for my career?
I'm an incoming college freshman, and I'm thinking about majoring in either mechanical engineering or product design (or both?). I have a teeny tiny bit of experience in CAD and Figma but other than that, nothing. I would say I'm a STEM person for sure, but I also have a background in visual art so one of these fields seems right for me.
The problem is that with good internships being so competitive these days, I can realistically only focus on either digital or physical design (and choose my major based on that) if I want a good chance of landing one. I'm really trying not to pigeonhole myself, but I'm interested in so many things that I'm worried it's going to be a "jack of all trades master of none" situation.
I could pick MechE and then choose the digital products track for my design major, or I could be consistent and do both focusing on physical products.
I'm also aware that I can pick up one or the other on the side, but if you could learn only physical product design or digital product design in the classroom, which would you pick? Or, should I try to be really exceptional at both for the most flexibility when going for jobs?
