Who has hiked Colorado's Penitente Canyon or the surrounding areas? The trails are great, but if you're into history, this place has a bizarre story.
The canyon was once occupied by a secretive monastic sect of devout Catholics known as "Los Penitentes." Among other things, they were famous for practicing self-flagellation (whipping themselves during prayer) and reenacting the crucifixion of Christ using real actors and real crosses. The monks left long ago, but signs of their reverent past remain in the canyon.
