I hope I’m in the right place… will resist the urge to pre-amble… I’m looking for some advice/direction on what to do with this bathroom. There is paint peeling and cracking, surface mold on the ceiling, what looks like some kind of seam tap showing through in places, etc.
The bathroom has no ventilation (there’s a window, but… ugh, it’s off-topic, but I will be posting about this separately), so this is almost entirely steam damage.
I’m a reasonably competent painter (tape, prime, cut-in, paint, etc) but the level of damage here I would like some guidance on (I’m comfortable doing the work, once I know what work needs to be done). And I have a pretty good idea of the right paint to use (wish the previous owner did!), tho I’ll happily take tips there too.
Do I need to strip the paint, especially where there are some sections with significant, thick cracking and/or the peeling has left a good 2-3mm change in surfaces?
How do I treat the mold? Someone told me that “kilz“ is a primer that will also kill the mold and I can go right over it, but I wanted to corroborate that.
In a perfect world, I’d love to just slap a few coats of primer down, sand/spackle the worst of the damage and then paint, but I have a feeling I should be doing more.
We are planning to re-do the whole room, but for economic reasons, that’s probably 1-2 years off, but I can’t leave the walls like this until then.
Thanks in advance for any help (including whether or not this is the best place to post this). #home
