Coming off as rude because you are quiet

I was meeting someone at a hotel so I sat outside at a table waiting. This couple came out with their kids and sat with me and I didn't say a word. I look up and their kid is giving me a God awful side eye. He must have been like 6 years old. Children picked up the vibes. Anyway, I just focus on my phone and then the woman points me out for sitting at the table... She was breaking the ice but I still didn't say anything. Finally my friend comes out and he knows these people. He says "Hey! Did you guys meet \_\_\_\_ yet?" They said "Oh...no. she's so quiet." ugh. I hated feeling this way and I still sat there awkwardly while they all talked. Some days later I passed by them and the husband/boyfriend mumbled something and this other lady they were with playfully yelled "leave her alone" ugh. you resort to bullying me now as adults. I was 22 when this happened I didn't know back then just a simple acknowledgement can make a difference. Dont just avoid people especially when they give you some time to engage. I have learned I have to say things so people don't think you are rude. I grew up sheltered by my mother, abused by my dad for even making a peep and scared of everything, no one knows this though, they would rather judge. Nowadays I say what comes to mind. and don't worry you might actually grow with time. I'm \*still\* learning
