many times and I will be there again on Wednesday, Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). I mentioned the Kuomintang in this post and that reminded me of the history of CNX. It was probably officially started as a grass airfield in the mid 1920s. Wikipedia says it was first started in 1921, but that is unlikely there are records of land set aside for the purpose of an airfield in 1924.

During World War II the Japanese had several planes stationed at the airfield. The British raided the airport in Feb, 1941 and again in March the Flying Tigers raided it again. The flying Tigers were the American Volunteer Group that fought with and for the Kuomintang in China. The attacked Chiang Mai from Burma.
