A quick checklist I wish I’d used before starting my backyard project

I’ve noticed a lot of backyard projects go sideways for the same reasons.

This is the simple checklist I now run through before starting anything:

1. Constraints first. Property lines, easements, utilities, drainage paths, sun and shade, tree roots. These quietly limit everything else.
2. Water behavior. Where water goes during a heavy rain today, and where you actually want it to go. Designing hardscape before this caused me problems.
3. Levels and slopes. Door thresholds, patios, walkways, and target slopes. Eyeballing grade almost always comes back to haunt you.
4. Access and mess. How materials get in, where dirt and debris go, and what needs protection. This is easy to underestimate.
5. Maintenance reality. Who maintains it, how often, and what failure looks like a year later. Weeds, pooling, dead plants, or erosion.
6. Only then pick finishes and plants.

Curious what step you wish you had done earlier on your last yard or outdoor project.
