Need advice for best stops along the Northern California and Oregon coasts.
Two British friends, in their 60's, are coming to the U.S. to visit me f71, September 1-15. I live in the Midwest. They came here in 2022, and we drove 1,500 miles over 3 states and into Canada, so they are excellent road trippers!
We are meeting up in Denver. From there we are taking the California Zephyr to San Francisco. We'll stay in San Francisco a few days, then out to Yosemite for 2 nights. I already have reservations there. After we leave Yosemite we plan to stay one night in Sonoma. That would be September 9.
After that our goal is to head north along the California and Oregon coasts. We want to be in Portland on the 14th, and we fly out September 15th.
I know nothing about this part of the country. Does anyone have thoughts on where to stay/ what to see on our route north those 4 days as we move toward Portland from Sonoma? We definitely have the Avenue of the Giants in the itinerary. I am currently considering Sonoma to Arcata. Is that a good place to stay? Arcata to Yachats. One or two nights in Yachats? Where else might you suggest we stay? I don't know if I want to go as far north as Astoria. Should I?
Any advice on things to do and see, and reasonably priced lodging would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
