Need water treatment advice for Southwestern U.S. / West Coast U.S.
Hi everyone, I'm gathering all my gear to go on my first backpacking trip. I'm based in SoCal, and my plan is to start here and eventually go on trips all across California and eventually Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. The vast majority of my outings will be in SoCal. I've been researching options for backcountry water treatment, and right now I'm leaning toward a compact hollow fiber filter like a Katadyn BeFree or a Sawyer Squeeze in combination with water treatment tablets to protect against viruses. I'd like to know if this is sufficient for the regions I will be hiking in. From my research it seems this should cover my needs as long as I'm mindful of where I'm collecting water from (avoid stagnant sources, sources contaminated by animal feces and mining/construction runoff, etc.)
I'm just curious to know if others have been successful with a similar setup in these areas and if this is sufficient, or if I'm missing anything. Hoping to glean wisdom from actual experience. YouTube is great, but I'm a bit leery of putting all of my trust in popular backpacking channels since it seems they are often trying to sell the viewer on a product as part of their business model.
Water treatment is no joke and I'd like to avoid pooping myself to death all alone on the trail. If anyone has links to good sources to read or watch that'd be good too if that's easier. I apologize if this topic is done to death, just a little apprehensive since I'm a first-timer. Thanks! #activity #nature source
