Why does my performance improve with non-Indian male interviewers?
I am a queer, white, cis man with 5+ years of technical experience in software engineering located in the US. I have been through quite a few interviews, and no matter how hard I try, I can't pass when the interviewer is an Indian man. It’s the same thing every time. They only ask me behavioral questions, and if there is a technical question, there is little to no interaction from them. Now, if I get interviewed by anyone else, the interview goes much better, or I just mess up and I'll own it. It’s frustrating on my end because I don't feel like I was given a fair chance. Am I missing something? I do try to mask my voice to sound more "straight-passing." Is there a cultural aspect that I am missing? I have passed roughly 5% of interviews when an Indian man was leading them, compared to roughly 40%–50% otherwise. #business source
