Wolves killed thousands of people across Europe in the 18th century. According to folklore, one infamous wolf called The Beast of Gévaudan killed up to 100 people, usually by tearing their throats out.

Wolf attacks were a  major problem across Europe in the 18th century , causing thousands of deaths. In the spring of 1765, during the Gévaudan panic, a wolf attacked near Soissons, northeast of Paris. Over two days, it killed at least four people before being hunted down and killed by a man with a pitchfork.
