Twisted my ankle halfway up and almost turned around. What's something you almost quit that was worth it?
Last month I was on a trail I had done a dozen times. About halfway up I twisted my ankle on a loose rock. Nothing serious, but enough to make every step after that feel like a negotiation with my own brain. Every switchback became an argument for turning around. I had my camera with me and almost packed it back up, convinced the whole hike was ruined. I kept going anyway, mostly out of stubbornness.
The top was covered in clouds when I got there. I stood there for ten minutes feeling like I had wasted the whole afternoon. Then the wind shifted. The clouds broke apart and the light hit the valley in a way I had never captured before. I got three shots that ended up being some of my best work from the entire year.
If I had turned around when it got uncomfortable I would have missed the whole thing. Not because I was special or disciplined, but because I just refused to let one bad moment decide how the rest of the day went. Discomfort is not a stop sign. It is just part of the route.
