Sting sounds like a failed lounge act
For those who may not know, Sting was originally a member of the incredibly popular late 70's/early 80's band The Police. He was bass player, lead vocalist and principle songwriter. The personal dynamics with his bandmates Stewart Copeland (drums) and Andy Summers (guitar) became more and more nettlesome as Sting garnered all the attention and praise as the more prominent, talented, and important member.
So they break up, and Sting embarks on what seemed like a really promising solo career 1985. At first it seemed to go well, with a Grammy performance, chart action (Dream of the Blue Turtles) and tons of media attention.
But it was already flagging to me. The new sound was tame, flaccid, dull. It got worse over time. There were one or two very nice, but laid back, singles (Shape of My Heart, Fragilidad) that I love, but this isn't the excitement and rock-reggae fusion beat of the Police.
They did a very lucrative reunion world tour and wore themselves out. But tellingly, no new studio releases.
Sting will never be the same again.
