✈️ A technical fault in NATS’s flight-processing system…

✈️ A technical fault in NATS’s flight-processing system disrupted UK departures on 8 September, and airlines were still working through the backlog the following day. NATS said the system had been restored, but cancellations and delays continued as aircraft and crews were left out of position.

More than 1,750 flights were cancelled, according to Associated Press reporting on 9 September. Reuters, citing flight-tracking data, reported more than 1,000 cancellations on Tuesday and a further 177 for Wednesday, nearly all at Heathrow.

The disruption affected major airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted. NATS said airspace had remained open and flights had continued to depart, while warning that recovery would take time.

The Civil Aviation Authority expects a full incident report from NATS and will consider whether further action is needed. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander also summoned NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe for an explanation. 🛫
