Cadbury World is a visitor attraction with a self-guided exhibition tour, created and run by the Cadbury Company at its manufacturing site, telling the history of chocolate and of the Cadbury business which was founded in 1824 by brothers John Cadbury and Benjamin Cadbury who, as Quakers , were barred from entering the professions.
I understand the attraction has evolved since it opened in 1990. When #iwasthere , the tour began overlooking a small production area staffed by employees who were close to retirement; they demonstrated how chocolates were hand-made, using the tools of yester-year before automation.
Huge barrels of foil-wrapped chocolates punctuated the route through the exhibition; employees encouraged visitors to take as much as they wanted – all gratis!
The exhibit led to the Cadbury Shop. Not only were unsweetened, cacao drink samples available, the usual pens, key chains, etc. were sold and, of course, Cadbury’s confectionary, including the hand-made chocolates seen at the start of the tour.
I also remember the small car with a Crème Egg livery. As I left the site, I passed the staff shop which bore a sign “NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.” I was disappointed as I had noticed the Cadbury Shop’s prices were what retailers charged. The Shop’s attraction was the product range. Feedback must have been noted and discounted “bulk” purchases are available, today.
