Movie Adaptations Do Not Need To Be Faithful To The Original

Idk if it’s just me but I am soooo tired of people complaining about it. Whether it’s books, video games, or comics, if they’re making an ADAPTATION, it’s not even meant to some record of the original. It’s still a different continuity/universe either way.

I recently saw a video about people complaining about Mystique in the new Marvel movie not being Jennifer Lawrence… and I’m just like bruh… Lawrence was literally the replacement for this past version/replacement actress and she looks more “lore accurate” than ever… then it made me realize how double sided and dumb the whole situation is.

But yeah. Book adaptations like Harry Potter, video games adaptations like Silent Hill (the first one), comic adaptations like Marvel or DC movies… they don’t have necessarily have to follow the original. They are their own universe, not everything will be the same. I actually used to go into these movies wondering “Hmm I wonder what will be different, I wonder what will be the same”

If they’re were meant to be in universe canon, that would be one thing, but they’re not. And honestly, Marvel/DC have sooo many different versions of their own characters idk why people complain at all.

I get maybe you want to see a story you care about be perfectly recreated as a way to maybe share with others in a more universal medium, but nothing is stopping you from doing that. The Resident Evil movies and Silent Hill movie got me into the respective video games. I am aware the RE games do not revolve around Alice, I am aware Harry isn’t a woman in Silent Hill and that Silent Hill is in Maine, not West Virginia. I’m aware a huge amount of stuff was cut from Harry Potter and that there are many changes. And comics, like I said, they are largely convoluted and have near infinite amounts of conflicting stories on their on before adaptations even come into it.

I guess the point is, I’ve enjoyed many different media because a movie adaptation brought me to it. I’m aware they are different, and I largely appreciate the differences

Do I think they could be handled better sometimes? Sure. Would I appreciate more stories that take place in the same universe that connect to each other going to the big screen rather than some alternate take on the story? 100%!

But honestly, I’m just tired of hearing people complain about it. Most people who who have been alive for awhile know how movie adaptations work, we all know it’s probably not exactly the same. And that’s fine.
