Hello all, I'm writing to get a sanity check on whether I'm simply disconnected from reality...
Once upon a time, in what feels like not that long ago (maybe 15 years), I was able to purchase slice cut veneers to build a veneer laminate boat. To be clear, these are 3-4mm thick, so-called filtches of veneers - not to be confused with 1/64" veneers faced onto 4mm plywood. This is what these filtches look like https://boislamica.com/wp-content/uploads/coupons-placages-bois-matiere-1.webp .
Now I don't feel that old, but I was able to obtain, in North America, both yellow pine and mahogany for roughly around the same board foot price as rough timber; it was difficult to find a large selection, but what was there was "just wood".
Today I asked for a quote for some 4mm slice cut veneers in Australia and was given a quote of $3200/bf. This has exploded my brain.
I just need to re-calibrate my settings: is this the current world of wood, or did I just not find the right supplier? #diy source
