Can someone explain how children's book covers that are really standout - think, in a boutique high-end bookstore in a very cute section of town get made? I've had various designers and illustrators who have years of experience who, as freelancers, still can't get it to the level that it looks when a publishing company is behind it. Why is that? Is it a combo of art direction, illustration and design, all working together? As an indie author, I loathe the design of some of my covers and have spent countless hours and dollars hiring perfect people wtih great portifolios - only to end up with very generic and unimpressive, uninspired designs. I just don't undrestand what the missing ingredient is. Are there just very few people who can execute this well, or am I just missing the unique combo of top talent as a team? And if you do know a freelance designer who is phenomenal at children's book covers, please post their portfolios. #art source
