We moved into a new house and are planning our dream garden for next year. There are a lot of deer in our area and they’ve been snacking relentlessly on the few container veggie plants I put out to test the best sunlight areas this year, so I want to make sure the long-term system keeps them out. We are hoping to install several raised garden beds in a sunny clearing. We are surrounded by woods and there are only a few spots that get sun so options feel sorta limited.
If you were starting from scratch, how would you set up the garden to keep deer out? Is an 8 foot fence sufficient? Does it need a mesh cover? Can we just put fencing around the beds with walking space on the sides or do we need to put it around a wider area? Any particular materials? Budget is flexible but would be willing to spend at least a few thousand for something that will work well and last a long time.
