Portugal family transportation!?

Portugal trip - Rental car or buses/trains? Family of four going to Sintra and Lagoa for 10 days. I've looked up a lot about our travel and it involves a ton of Uber trips, buses, and trains with transfers. Our Sintra hotel has free parking but we would still use Uber for our trip to Pena Palace. It's more the to and from Lagoa that I'm thinking a rental car. Our kids are 9 & 11 but we will have large suitcases and a 5-7 hour travel day both ways with buses, trains and transfers to and from Lagoa. With a rental car, it's less than three and we can drop off at Lisbon airport the day before our departure. Am I crazy for thinking the rental car is the better route?
