Sicily: Advice Needed for Itinerary Selection. October 2026
Hello. Me and my friend are 24 years old from NYC and have about 10 days in early October to explore the Mediterranean. We are looking to enjoy the last of euro summer, and are thinking to either base in Catania, Sicily or Palermo, Sicily. We could spend all of our time there, or explore both, but we are also open to taking a short trip somewhere else. We brainstormed Mallorca, Malta, and Crete. Now I’ve heard the Catania side is better, and has Taormina, Etna, and Ortigia, but I am also hearing of volcanic activity so we are looking into the equivalent for Palermo. Any insight on which region is better would be appreciated. We would like our alternate location to fill in the gaps of what our first location lacks.
Our priorities are: Warm weather Beaches Good nightlife Good food Nice scenery/views, perhaps a little hike? Enough to do and explore A relatively relaxed trip with little cramming
Just based off the flight prices and durations alone, here are some of the combinations that work best
Mallorca + Palermo
Catania + Malta
Catania + Crete
Palermo + Catania
From the research I’ve done so far, Mallorca seems appealing because we could base ourselves around Palma, have easy access to nightlife and beaches, and explore other parts of the island. Same wilts Malta. For Crete, we found a cheap flight from Sicily to HER and I figured it would be much warmer there and heard it has nightlife. Let me know if otherwise because I’ve been hearing the Chania region is better but it’s much more expensive. Sicily seems like it might offer more variety in terms of food, towns and scenery which are essential in any location.
My first impressions of Catania. Catania has Taormina, which is very clean but also very touristy. Rocky beaches but nicer views with Etna and Ortigia as day trips. I know a ton of people who have been and said Taormina’s great but Catania is worth skipping for the other cities in the region.
My first impressions of Palermo. Palermo might be a more rugged city but still has great food and has better surrounding beaches. It doesn’t have the same flight risk due to etna eruptions. I’d like some help finding Taormina and Ortigia equivalents for the Palermo region.
My first impressions of Mallorca. Definitely has the views, city feel, and beaches that I’m looking for. Water should still be warm. Rule changing in October where you can’t rent boat without license. I know there’s some beaches near Palma, but would like more help filtering out the best ones. Nightlife also accessible apparently. It just isn’t Italy which is what the trip was initially intended to be.
First impressions of Malta. More south, therefore warmer water and stronger sun. Can provide the nightlife fix that Italy may be lacking. Heard great things but I need to do more research to learn what I want out of Malta.
For people who have been to any of these, which would you choose, or which combination, for 8-10 days at our age and with these priorities? Probably October 8th - 17th. Also, where specifically would you stay on the island? Or if you have other suggestions please let me know!
Any ideas for beaches or great hidden gem views from any of these locations that are easily accessible would also be appreciated for me to make itineraries for each! Thank you! #travel source
