The EU Entry/Exit System’s discretionary flexibility…

The EU Entry/Exit System’s discretionary flexibility period ended on 6 September, raising renewed concerns that biometric border checks could lengthen queues for travellers. 🛂

EES replaces passport stamps for short-stay non-EU travellers with electronic records that include passport details, facial images and, for most people aged 12 or older, fingerprints. The system is intended to identify overstayers and strengthen border management.

Airlines and travel groups say the new checks have already contributed to missed flights and connections. The Guardian reported that some states may still limit or delay enforcement while resolving operational problems.

Cross-Channel routes to France remain a particular concern: fingerprint kiosks at Eurotunnel, the Port of Dover and Eurostar’s London St Pancras operations were not fully in use, and Eurostar said enrolments continued manually. ✈️

The European Commission has not formally extended the flexibility period, but said it was working with the few member states needing adjustments at specific border crossings.
