Have you also noticed that people turn on you the moment…

Have you also noticed that people turn on you the moment you become more assertive?

I'm early 30s and I have been noticing recently that the moment I try to be more assertive in all social environment where I have prior history, the whole group turns on me, as if to say, "you're acting out of place with respect to your proper station". I've noticed this with extended family, and also at the workplace. But not everywhere. I have not noticed this within social environments where I have little history.

The way I interpret this is, there's some implied hierarchy that is assigned to people within the group, something that develops with time, and the moment somebody who is considered to be lower ranked grows out of their shell and dares to have an opinion, the whole group feels like their whole world is being challenged.

Is this something other people also notice, or is it just me?

The challenge is then, how to challenge the hierarchy without turning people against you? Or is conflict inevitable? I don't have a problem being assertive, but I have a problem being amicably assertive.
