On 29th July 1967 the USS Forrestal was gearing up for a major bombing campaign in the Vietnam War. All her available jets were ranged on deck fully armed and fully fuelled.
At 10.51am Lieutenant Commander James E. Bangert switched his jet from ground power to internal power. A wiring fault caused an electrical signal to bypass several interlocks and accidentally fired a Zuni rocket. The rocket hit Senator John McCain’s jet, which was on a catapult, ready to launch.
The fire from the rocket as it fired, started a larger fire around the jet. As the heat built, 1000lb bombs and missiles started to cook off in the heat. One explosion blew a hole in the deck, causing the fire to spread to the hangar below. It took several hours of heroic damage control efforts to bring the fire under control and then extinguish it.
