NGC6888

NGC 6888, known as the Crescent Nebula for its shape evoking that famous Viennese pastry, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. At its heart lies WR 136 (HD 192163), a Wolf-Rayet star whose intense UV radiation ionises the surrounding gas, which re-emits that energy as visible light — much like a neon sign the size of a solar system.

The nebula itself was sculpted by the collision between WR 136's current fast stellar wind and the slower wind it had ejected during an earlier phase of its life — a cosmic rear-end collision frozen in glowing gas. The expansion velocity of the shell, measured at \~85 km/s, gives a rough age of 250,000 years: a geological eyeblink, but a significant fraction of the star's remaining lifetime.
