Unlike other sports, baseball depends a lot on commentary to be watchable.
Seriously, most of the "action" of baseball is downtime accompanied by constant chatter on player stats, team prospects, pitch counts, close ups on the players, anecdotes, schedule info, replays. You can listen to an entire game being played out on the radio and not miss much visually. Sooo much time is filled in with the play by play, and the excitement is truly generated by the reaction of the commentators. The actual actions of pitching, swinging the bat to hit the ball, catching and throwing, and base-running is technical but not too interesting. Compare it to the drama of other sports and baseball is really shaped by those calling the game.
