Do you guys do any leg strengthening exercises?

Hi. Avid hiker here.

I suffered a bad covid infection in 2023 and developed long covid M.E. Basically, from september 2023 to now I've not been able to do a serious hike, and most I could do for a while was 2-3 miles, and I spent a big part of 2025 bed bound.

Last few months I've seen big improvement, at one point increasing my length by 500 steps a day, and recently managed 14k steps. I was mostly bed bound 3 months ago. Only walking about 20 steps a day to the toilet. Really happy I was able to start recovering.

Over the last week I did a certain walk a few times that involved some sharp uphill parts. I didn't feel bad until yesterday where I woke up and noticed bad knee ache in my left knee.

This morning it's mostly gone. Maybe it's just because my legs weren't used to it, but I'm grateful that at 34 and so much time out I can still recover, I made sure to maintain good nutrition during these difficult times.

I notice that when I bend my legs that my left knee carries more of the weight than my right, probably because of weaker quads etc.

I think I need to strengthen my legs again, walking alone I don't know will be enough. Do any of you hit the gym or do leg strengthening exercises? I think it's necessary to make sure the weight/impact hits the muscles not the bones/joints. Cheers.

I may just be worrying to much, it's probably just my body reconditioning itself. I'm sure if I had done all of this flat I'd not have gotten this pain, but there was quite a bit of uphill and forest stairs at certain parts.
