Best compound for sealing over metal roof screws?

I have an older metal roof from the mid 90s. In a lot of places they put this type of compound over the screw heads and flashing seams and it dried hard and stayed leak free for 30 years. I’m trying to figure out what this substance was. It’s blackish grey and dries really hard almost like a construction adhesive. It has little cracks and pitting in it, but is basically bulletproof and really hard to remove.

Does anyone know if there was a standard type of substance used on metal roofs for this type of purpose during that time?

I’m trying to figure out because I have a bunch of areas where I want to put something elite on some problematic screws. Every modern substance I’ve used does not work that good. I’ve tried metal roof silicone, regular silicone, sikiflex, loctite premium, titebond metal roof, through the roof, mastic, to name a few. Nothing is working as good as this old stuff worked.

so does anyone know what this substance could’ve been or can recommend something that will work better, please?
